How do I gain admission to a higher education institution in Switzerland?
Higher education in Switzerland is organised at cantonal and university level. To be admitted to a university or university of applied sciences, foreign students must hold a secondary school-leaving certificate equivalent to that obtained in Switzerland.
Foreign students can take courses at any of the 12 universities and 25 universities of applied sciences in Switzerland. Universities mainly offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in fields such as natural sciences, social sciences, economics, law and medicine. Universities of applied sciences, on the other hand, offer more practical programmes in fields such as engineering, the arts, music, health and social work.
Language of instruction
In terms of language of instruction, German, French and Italian are the main languages in Switzerland. Universities and universities of applied sciences often offer courses in English for foreign students, particularly for masters programmes. It is therefore important to check the language requirements with the educational establishment you have chosen.
